10 Questions with
PANTS YELL!
by Jonathan Pilgrim

This Boston trio has already released two albums, been on tour in Europe, and played with the likes of The Islands and Camera Obscura. If you haven't already, we think it's about time you met Pants Yell!

Pilgrims of Sound: Could you tell our readers a bit about your backstory? Also, I know, it's a boring question, but the exclamation mark intrigues me, so I have to ask - how did you come up with Pants Yell!?
Andrew Churchman: We all met as students and friends at the Massachussetts College of Art, three years ago and started playing together in my bedroom. The name has no real meaning, I just thought it sounded and looked nice. I'm embarrassed by it now because I found out while in Britain that they call underwear 'pants'. So to them, our name is even sillier.

PS: What are your musical influences? Along the same lines, how would you describe your sound to someone who's new to the band?
Andrew: My influences are girls and boys with guitars. Some of the most important of which are friends that I met early on in pants yell! that inspired me as a fresh faced boy: Ryan Doyle, Tanya Sullivan, Alex McGregor, Tim Howard, Casey Keenan. They were just as crucial to me as the Smiths.

PS: Can you describe your creative process?
Andrew: Sitting with a guitar while trying to do homework, or just sitting around with a guitar really.

PS: What's the best part about being in Pants Yell!?
Andrew: Recording music. Being in an actual recording studio is so much fun. They usually have a great magazine selection too.

PS: Can you assign any extreme labels to band members? Like, who's a neat freak, who's the partier, who writes in a dream journal, that sort of thing.
Andrew: I'm certain I can vouch for everyone when I say any and all extreme labels can be assigned to me, minus the partying bit.

PS: Would you sell your soul to the devil for the perfect song?
Andrew: I doubt it.

PS: If you had a 10 minute captive audience with your favourite rock star, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you say?
Andrew: I'm going to sound like such a dork, but yeah, it would definitely be Morrissey and all I'd say is: "We have practice on Tuesday, don't be late!"

PS: What are your thoughts on the Boston music scene?
Andrew: Don Lennon put it best: "They're making compilations no one wants to hear. They're dressing up in space suits and using lots of gear and when you meet them off stage they can be really mean but I've still not lost all faith in the Boston music scene."

PS: How do you measure your success as a band? Is it by money, crowd size, MySpace popularity, critical aclaim, or something more personal?
Andrew: I guess I'm speaking for myself, but rest assured, to us, success as a band has NOTHING to do with money, crowd size or myspace popularity. In fact it was everything to do with the complete opposite of those things. It's totally personal. It's a kid from Georgia sending you a cdr of his band covering one of your songs, or a field full of Swedish kids singing along to a song you wrote in your living room in Brighton, MA or the guy from seasick crocidle e-mailing you to say he likes your cdr.

PS: What do you hope for the future of Pants Yell!?
Andrew: I don't die before we make another record. That's probably the most important thing.
